Japan Tax Reform 2017: what you need to know, including the enhanced inheritance and gift taxation of foreigners

The French Chamber's Tax and Regulations Committee is pleased to propose a seminar devoted to the 2017 Japanese tax reform focusing on individual and corporate tax updates.

The reform aims at stimulating the economy through higher corporate spending in R&D, hiring and increasing compensation. The seminar will introduce the enacted reform and will provide insights into major amendments, affecting both individuals and corporations. Changes to the Japan inheritance and gift tax, in particular its impacts on foreign nationals residing in Japan, as well as new tax planning opportunities and compliance requirements, will be presented.

Among the topics to be discussed will be:

Individual Taxes
•    Capital gains taxation of foreigners having stayed up to five years in Japan
•    Individual income tax audits and cross-border information exchange
•    Inheritance and gift taxation of foreigners depending on their period of stay in Japan as well as their visa status

Corporate Taxes
•    R&D tax credits
•    Tax credits for increase in compensation
•    Reorganizations (tax qualified spin-off)
•    Tax treaty updates
•    Transfer pricing updates and developments
•    Tax audit trends
