Understanding retail consumers' needs
The French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan is pleased to invite its Supporting Members to a luncheon gathering at Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa. This time, we are honored to welcome Mr. Naoya Araki, President and Representative Director at Hankyu Department Stores, Inc., as a guest speaker.
Can innovation by traditional retailers overcome the disruptive force of e-commerce? How can department stores face the current shift in the consumers’ spending choices?
Mr. Araki will answer these questions by drawing on Hankyu’s successful experiments to stay ahead of the retail game and showcasing various realizations, notably Hankyu’s thriving “French Fair”.
“Hankyu” is one of Japan's ten largest department stores. The company has twelve department stores divided between the prefectures of Osaka, Hyogo and Tokyo. The first Hankyu department store built at Umeda station in Osaka in 1929, became the first railway terminal department store and heralded a new wave characterized by the opening of department stores by railroad companies on prime sites along the railway lines.
This is a unique opportunity to meet the President of a major Japanese retail company and to exchange ideas with top corporate-level representatives from various industries, during an informal gathering around a meal at the recently renovated Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa, boasting a spacious garden of 20,000m2, only a 5-minute walk from Shinagawa station.
About the speaker
Mr. Naoya Araki graduated from the University of Kyoto, Faculty of Economics and joined Hankyu Department Stores, Inc. in 1981. He became Head of the Suburb Area Store Development in 2003 and Operating Officer one year later. As of October 2008, Hankyu Department Stores, Inc., the department store business subsidiary of H2O Retailing Corporation, changed its corporate name to Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores, Inc., and in the span of four years, Mr. Naoya Araki quickly rose through the ranks to President & Representative Director.
