A look back at our guided tour, exploring Hakata-ori and the landscapes of Itoshima

On Friday, July 3, the CCIFJ Kyushu Office was pleased to organize a day dedicated to exploring the artisanal heritage and iconic landscapes of Fukuoka Prefecture. The six participants had the privilege of enjoying a beautiful sunny day, which provided ideal conditions for this cultural immersion in the heart of Itoshima.

We were delighted to welcome the participants alongside Mr. Kuroki at Kuroki Orimono, where they began the day with a presentation on this family-run business and its craftsmanship, passed down through several generations. They learned about the history of Hakata-ori, its weaving techniques, and the symbolism behind its traditional patterns.

During the workshop tour, participants were able to explore the entire obi-making process, from the creation of the weaving yarn to the final product. This behind-the-scenes look at the workshop highlighted the precision, technical skill, and passion that drive the artisans at Kuroki Orimono. Participants then took part in a weaving workshop, creating a sample obi that they were able to keep as a memento of the experience an activity that generated great enthusiasm. The visit concluded with a friendly get-together, followed by a tour of the workshop’s boutique, offering the opportunity to discover and purchase original Hakata-ori creations.

The group then gathered for a convivial lunch overlooking the magnificent Itoshima Bay, where they enjoyed a generous buffet featuring seafood specialties, sashimi, and tempura, all while taking in the stunning scenery. The afternoon continued in the heart of Itoshima with a tour of several local artisan shops offering souvenirs, clothing, and regional products, before wrapping up with a break at a local café featuring traditional Japanese architecture.

From learning about ancestral craftsmanship to meeting artisans, sampling local cuisine, and exploring Itoshima’s heritage, the day offered participants a rich and enjoyable cultural experience that was greatly appreciated by the entire group.
