Over 3 million tourists visited Japan in March, an all-time record

This is the highest number achieved for a single month, surpassing the 2,991,100 visitors in July 2019.

According to a survey conducted by the National Tourism Organization, the number of Japanese tourists was 3.08 million in March, the highest number ever recorded for a single month, surpassing the 2,991,100 visitors who visited Japan in July 2019.

Tourists from South Korea were the most numerous, followed by visitors from Taiwan, China and the USA.

“Of the 23 countries and regions surveyed, 17 recorded a record number of visitors in March. We are closely monitoring the number of tourists from China, which remains at around 70% of its pre-pandemic level,” said the Japan National Tourism Organization.

The cherry blossom season and the depreciation of the yen are said to have been the main reasons for the increase in tourists.

In addition, tourist spending per traveler is around 209,000 yen, more than 60,000 yen higher than the same period in 2019. The Japan Tourism Agency attributes these figures to the impact of the weak yen, as well as to an increase in the number of days spent in Japan.
