Japan’s low-carbon transition: testimonies from Kirin and Amundi

Carbon neutrality: it is time to move from setting targets to taking action. In September, global non-profit CDP showed that Japanese firms are currently aligned on a 2.8°C global warming level by 2100. At 2.2°C, Europe is doing better but still not enough to achieve the 1.5°C limit of the Paris Agreement. These figures show a gap between ambitious long-term pledges of companies and the reality of corporate climate plans.

In Europe and in the US, asset managers are increasing their engagement with companies in their portfolio, to encourage and support an accelerated alignment with a decarbonized economy. In Japan, corporate climate disclosure has been gaining momentum with the wide adoption of international platforms such as CDP or TCFD.

Disclosure is necessary but not sufficient. What is coming next? How can Japanese companies keep progressing in their decarbonization journey and how can foreign financial actors contribute to an accelerated, more science-based decarbonization of Japan?

Two weeks after COP27, our speakers - Yasunori Iwanaga, Chief Responsible Investment Officer at Amundi Japan, and Hiroshi Fujikawa, Executive Officer, General Manager CSV Strategy Department at Kirin Holding, an active member of the Japan Climate Initiative (JCI)  – will share their views on these questions.
