The City of Ōgaki (Gifu Prefecture)

The MOF Museum Japan will open in 2026 in the former Makita Elementary School (牧田小学校) in Ōgaki, in the heart of Gifu Prefecture. The city of Ogaki is located more or less in the center of the Japanese archipelago and has thrived for years as a strategic transportation hub. It is known as the “final destination” of the journey taken by haiku master Matsuo Bashō at the end of his travel diary The Narrow Road to the Deep North.Ogaki is a wealth city in history and culture, where the spirit of haiku still lives on. Nicknamed the “City of Water” due to its abundant underground springs, it has developed into one of the leading industrial cities in the prefecture and plays a central role in the Nishi-Mino region. In 2006, Ogaki merged with the towns of Kamiishizu and Sunomata, becoming a rare example of a municipality with double enclaves in Japan. The city is served by the Tokaido Main Line, the Tokaido Shinkansen, and the Meishin Expressway, providing convenient access to major urban areas.
