Mizuka UENO (Guest Principal, Tokyo Ballet)
Born in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Mizuka Ueno began ballet at the age of 5.
In 1993, at the age of 15, she won the Prix de Lausanne scholarship and studied abroad for two years at the Princess Grace Academy of Classical Dance in Monaco. She graduated at the top of her class.
Upon returning to Japan, she starred in numerous classical full-length ballets and works by Roland Petit.
In 2004, she joined the Tokyo Ballet. As a principal dancer, she commanded the spotlight in leading roles within Japan's most prestigious ballet companies.
Her signature work is “Boléro.” As the last dancer to receive direct instruction in ‘Boléro’ from the late Maurice Béjart, one of the world's most renowned choreographers of the 20th century, and the first Japanese woman permitted to perform it, Ueno Mizuka's “Boléro” captivates audiences by gathering all attention onto the deep red circular table, with her soul's radiance overflowing from her raised hands, continuing to move the hearts of many.
She has been a leading figure in the Japanese ballet world for over 20 years and is a world-renowned ballerina sought after by dancers around the world for collaborations.
Her achievements were recognized with the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award in the Dance Category at the 72nd Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival in 2021.
She also received the Purple Ribbon Medal in 2023.
Her career spans beyond ballet to various disciplines. In 2021, she performed in the musical "Don Juan" and the Noh dance play “At the Hawk's Well" commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Minoru Gensho Umewaka, acclaimed as a “Living National Treasure”.
In 2022, she launched her production brand “piuprima di mizuka,” expanding into fashion, beauty, and healthcare-related products.
She currently serves as the Kanagawa Tourism Goodwill Ambassador and was appointed as a special committee member of the Kanagawa Prefectural Hall Renovation Basic Plan Formulation Committee in 2025.
In April 2023, she was appointed as a guest principal with The Tokyo Ballet.
