Penélope Cruz and Brad Pitt in “Un homme et une femme” for Chanel

For the 2.55 handbag advertising campaign, Chanel pays tribute to French cinema.

Gabrielle Chanel overturned the codes of haute couture when she invented the 2.55 handbag. “I was tired of carrying bags in my hand and losing them, so I added a strap so I could carry them over my shoulder,” she was quoted as saying at the time.

Chanel’s latest advertising campaign features this iconic handbag with a nod to French cinema. It was first shown in Deauville during the presentation of the Fall/Winter 2024-25 ready-to-wear collection last March.

Deauville is not only the place where Gabrielle Chanel opened her first boutique, but also the setting for Claude Lelouch's film “Un homme et une femme” (1966). In a scene from the film, lead actress Anouk Aimée also wears a Chanel handbag.

Those who have seen "Un homme et une femme" may notice that the ad is almost identical to the original, both in the images and in the conversation between Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt.
